Who Told You: You Had a Mind Disease?

What is depression, and why is taking medication not the only solution to the problem? Read on for some alternatives.

The #1 drug sold today is for depression.

There is a whole lot of emotional pain in the world, and people are looking for a solution. With such a painful condition like depression, it is understandable that a pill seems like a dependable port in the storm.

If this is you or someone you love, it is important to look into causes of depression. The hope is to get your health and your emotions back to their God-given potential rather than looking at medicine as a best or permanent solution.

Illness is determined by a “measurable deviation from normal physical functioning.” With depressive and anxiety disorders, there is only a questionnaire to diagnose it, and the questions are usually asked of someone who’s feeling stressed or blue at the time. It is a subjective diagnosis at best and at worst, can be a misdiagnosis.

Of great concern are the side effects of suicide and aggressive behavior that come with anti-depressants.  This has become a massive, mounting concern as it has created a crisis in both our schools and our military overseas.  The concern has hit the media over the last few years as a host of recent celebrity deaths have been related not to illegal drugs, but from prescribed ones – always including multiple mental/emotional drugs.

With hundreds of millions of prescriptions being written each year for antidepressants, sleeping medications, and other anxiety-related pills, we have to realize that something is not right about all of this diagnosing and prescribing. Clearly, there are other causes and other cures to consider.

There are a number of common causes of depression, none of which are helped by anti-depressants. Some common reasons people get depressed are nutritional deficiencies like Vitamin B1, magnesium, potassium, and calcium deficiency, low endocrine function, hormone imbalances, insomnia, hypoglycemia, thyroid problems, adrenal problems, chronic viral infections, anemia, yeast infection, chemical sensitivity, weak digestion, poor diet, liver toxicity, dehydration, hypertension, food allergies, prolonged stress, and chronic disease.

While an anti-depressant may or may not make someone feel better, it doesn’t eliminate any of the causes. If there is a problem, the first step is to remove the interference and get back to healthy. Depression is a difficult and complex issue. It is just not simply solved by a diagnosis and drug. Certainly being told simply to take drugs for the rest of your life is not a permanent solution.

If someone has been diagnosed and prescribed medications already, it is not wise just to stop the drugs. This type of drug is dangerous to keep taking, and it is dangerous to quit taking as well. Instead, people need to work with their “health” doctor to get well while working with their medical “sick” doctors to safely wean off the drugs.  Do not just accept you are hopeless and sick.

While every problem has unique needs, the ML Principle is the same when it comes to all conditions:

STEP 1: Build health.  If you work towards getting the body well and working right again, all conditions improve or are eliminated.

STEP 2: Look at causes.  Whether it’s heart disease, diabetes, asthma, ADD/ADHC, chronic infections, pain, fatigue, cancer, or Alzheimer’s – there’s an underlying reason.  Conditions are rarely there as simply a result of genetics or bad luck.  Might be easy to call it that – but just not true.
